Why Dairy Free
Compare Journey’s life of love and care with the typical life of a baby cow born into the food production system.
Journey the calf
In the early morning of July 15th, 2018, Journey the calf was born into freedom. However, his fate would have been much different if his mother had not been rescued by Pasado’s Safe Haven just hours before giving birth. Together, we can now follow Journey as he experiences the life that all creatures like him deserve.
Journey's life versus the fate he could have had
Journey was one of the lucky ones. Below we compare Journey’s life of love and care with the typical life of a baby cow born into the food production system.
Journey was born in a quiet stall, with fresh food and water for his mother to feel comfortable.
The average birth on a dairy farm is in a crowded barn. This is stressful for mother and baby.
In Journey’s first day of life, he was able to be cleaned, cuddled, and nursed by his mother; building a bond that they will share for life.
Generally, within a day of being born, calves are taken from their mothers so that their milk can be used for humans. Both mother and baby cry for each other.
Cows are extremely maternal and Journey’s mother knew exactly what to do as he began to learn about the new world around him.
Because male calves are a “by-product” of the dairy industry, they are sold to be used as meat.
After a week of growing stronger, Journey was able to go outside for the first time!
Calves used for veal are often kept in small areas to prevent them from developing too much muscle.
Milk from cows is specifically designed to help calves grow. Journey put on about 70 pounds in just 4 weeks of life!
Calves used for veal have been taken from their mothers, so they are given formula food. This formula is lacking in needed nutrients which prevents them from healthy growth. Meanwhile, mother cows are milked for human consumption. In this photo, a calf has died in his veal crate on a dairy farm.
Safe at Pasado’s Safe Haven, Journey will get to grow up in a world where he is always loved and respected.
At less than 4 months old, the average lifespan of a calf used for veal, calves are slaughtered and used for food.
