EVENTS FOR EVERY SCOUT

As a Girl Scouts of Western Washington Program Partner, Pasado’s Safe Haven offers service and learning opportunities that align with Girl Scout missions and values. Scouts will receive a Pasado’s Safe Haven Animal Advocate patch and complete Girl Scout badge requirements while connecting with animals, participating in service-learning, and building compassion for all.

There are two ways Scouts can join us:

Private Troop Tour

A sanctuary visit and at-home service learning project with your Girl Scout Troop earns Scouts a Pasado’s Safe Haven Animal Advocate patch and completes the requirements for Girl Scout badges.

Scout Days at the Sanctuary

Scout Days at the Sanctuary are held four times a year for all ages. All activities are held at the sanctuary and will earn Scouts a Pasado’s Safe Haven Animal Advocate patch and complete the requirements for Girl Scout badges.

Pasado’s Safe Haven’s Girl Scout events include activities that will achieve the requirements of the following badges:

Daisy Three Cheers for Animals Badge

Find out what animals need and how to care for them.
1. Birdbath Award (Learn): Daisies learn to care for animals and themselves. Scouts consider what all animals need to stay healthy and happy and connect those needs to themselves to learn that all of us need a home, food, water, and love.
2. Red Robin Award (See): Daisies use their new knowledge and creativity to teach others how to care for animals. Scouts choose a service-learning project that teaches others about caring for an animal.
3. Tula Award (Do): Girls gain courage and confidence to teach others about animals. Scouts are actively involved in the planning, completion, and sharing of their service-learning project to help inspire and empower their compassionate actions for others.

Brownie Pets Badge

Learn how to choose the pet that’s right for you – or find out how to take the best care of a pet you already have.
1. Find out what care different pets need. Scouts learn how the needs of pets are similar to human needs. At the sanctuary, Scouts will experience high-quality care of dogs, cats, and farmed animals.
2. Keep a pet comfy. Scouts will discuss what needs are met at a sanctuary to keep all species comfortable and safe. Staff will give Scouts an introduction to dog and cat body language.
3. Help a pet stay healthy and safe. Service-learning projects give Scouts an active role in helping provide needed supplies and support to keep our rescued animals, and pets of the surrounding community, healthy and safe.
4. Make a pet feel loved. During sanctuary tours, Scouts are encouraged to take perspectives of the rescued animals and consider their feelings. Scouts are prompted to consider: What shows us animals might feel nervous? How can we make them feel comfortable?
5. Feed a pet. Brownies will have a chance to feed animals during a sanctuary tour, while learning about healthy and appropriate food choices for several species.

Junior Animal Habitats Badge

Find out more about where animals live, how they play, and how humans can help them.
1. Find out about wild animals. Juniors are encouraged to pay special attention to the nature reserve areas around the sanctuary and make observations about wild animals that share their habitats with domestic animals and humans. Scouts will compare wild and domestic breeds at the sanctuary.
2. Investigate an animal habitat. During sanctuary tours, Juniors will be introduced to various needs of animals and prompted to consider how their habitats help meet those needs.
3. Create an animal house. Juniors will be encouraged to consider what each animal needs to make a home perfect for them as an individual.
4. Explore endangered habitats. The space of Pasado’s Safe Haven sanctuary also houses wetlands and native growth, which are critical spaces for biodiversity and endangered animal habitats.
5. Help protect animal habitats. Service-learning projects allow Juniors to take an active role in choosing how they would like to take their new knowledge and make a difference in protecting animal habitats.

Cadette Animal Helpers Badge

Learn about the many ways animals help humans.
1. Explore the connection between humans and animals. Cadettes have the chance to meet animals while learning their rescue stories. This direct interaction helps develop empathy for animals, which drives compassionate actions.
2. Find out how animals help keep people safe. There are several animal species who call the Pasado’s Safe Haven sanctuary home that are naturally inclined to protect humans. Cadettes will have a chance to meet them and learn how farmed animals, as well as dogs and cats, keep us safe.
3. Know how animals help people emotionally. Cadettes will interview staff and volunteers at the sanctuary to learn how animals can help people emotionally in many different ways.
4. Check out how animals help people with disabilities. Discussions with staff and volunteers often prompt discussions about how animals of all species can help those with disabilities.
5. Look at how animals might help us in the future. Cadettes will consider special skills of individual animals they met and learned about, and how an animal’s skill can humanely help humans.
Service-learning projects will give Cadettes a chance to further explore the connection between humans and animals, as well as how animals help humans.
